This Wasn’t the Weekend We Planned

This wasn’t the weekend we planned.
On Thursday morning, we found our mama pig dead. We think she may have died while giving birth, possibly because a piglet was stuck, but we don’t know for sure. She left behind six tiny piglets who still needed their mama. Suddenly, we’re responsible for keeping six little lives going, hand-feeding them every three hours, day and night.
It’s heartbreaking to lose an animal, especially when there are babies left behind. There isn’t much time to stop and process the loss when those little ones are depending on you. You just have to step up and do what you can.
So that’s what we’re doing. One feeding at a time, through messy floors, interrupted sleep, and the exhaustion that comes with caring for newborn piglets around the clock.

And then, as if Thursday hadn’t already brought enough change, our incubator eggs started to pip.
This is our very first hatch, and it began on the same day we lost Mama Pig. New life and loss, happening side by side.

I’m tired. I’m a little overwhelmed. And I’m definitely wondering what exactly I’ve gotten myself into.
Life on a small homestead isn’t always the picture-perfect version people imagine. There are exciting firsts and rewarding moments, but there are also hard days when things don’t go as planned. Sometimes, all you can do is adjust and care for the animals depending on you.
R.I.P., Mama Pig. You are missed.
Welcome to the world, little fighters. We’re rooting for you.
