The Party I Never Expected

Sometimes the moments that mean the most aren’t the big adventures.

Sometimes they are the quiet reminders that you are seen, known, and loved.

I’m in Springfield, Missouri, for a bowling tournament. Ten of us are here to bowl, with a few others along for the weekend who aren’t competing. A few of us bring our RVs, while others stay in a cabin — a combination that’s somehow become known as the “Magic Cabin.”

One of the things I love about this group is how naturally everything happens.

Food just appears at mealtimes. Fifteen minutes after we finish eating, everything is cleaned up. Nobody seems to know exactly how it happens. It just does.

This weekend, my friends surprised me with something I never saw coming.

A Deb’s Best Life Party. There’s a banner. There’s a cake. There are decorations and gifts and all the little details that make it obvious someone has been paying attention.

The cake is decorated with pieces of my life that matter in this season

A camping chair.

An RV.

A marathon 26.2 sign.

Running shoes.

A grill.

A cross.

A bowling ball and bag.

It was a snapshot of who I was becoming — the things I loved, the goals I had worked for, and the pieces of life that brought me joy.

But what gets me isn’t the party itself.

It’s that they remembered.

Years earlier, right after my divorce, these same friends tried to make me laugh during one of the hardest seasons of my life. They sang me “Happy Divorce to You” — because sometimes laughter is the only way through something painful.

During that time, I mentioned I’d never had a bridal shower.

It was a passing comment.

I don’t even remember saying it.

But they did.

They didn’t forget. They just waited until they could give me something even better — not a celebration of the life I’d left behind, but of the one I was building.

There is a lot going in my life.

Goals. Accomplishments.

The races. The miles.

The adventures.

But this moment reminded me that a Best Life isn’t built only through the things we accomplish.

It’s also built through the people who walk beside us.

The people who remind us who we are.

The people who celebrate where we’ve been and encourage where we’re going.

I am incredibly grateful for friends who know me, support me, and remind me that life is meant to be celebrated.
